University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship

The University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship, formerly known as the University of Waikato Masters Research Scholarship, has been a cornerstone of the university's commitment to graduate research since its establishment in 1997. This scholarship supports outstanding students pursuing a master's thesis at the University of Waikato, with the number of scholarships awarded annually determined by the available funding pool. The application process consists of two rounds, closing on October 31st and April 30th each year, and welcomes applicants who have already commenced their thesis.

Purpose:

The Scholarship provides financial assistance to excellent students undertaking a master’s thesis in any discipline at the University of Waikato.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

Applicants must be enrolled or intending to enroll full-time in their first master’s degree, have had contact with a potential University of Waikato master’s thesis supervisor, and must not have applied for this Scholarship before. Eligibility extends to NZ Citizens, NZ Permanent residents, NZ Resident Class Visa holders, Australian Citizens/Permanent Residents domiciled in NZ, and international students. Selection is based on academic merit, including other factors such as prior research experience, alignment with research priorities, and financial hardship.


Value and Tenure:

The Scholarship has a value of up to $15,000, with the amount varying based on the thesis type and points enrolled. Full-time recipients receive either $15,000 or $12,000, credited directly to tuition fees and paid monthly into their bank account. Part-time recipients receive $5,500 credited to tuition fees, with no stipend portion. The Scholarship tenure must not extend past 24 months.

Application:

Applications close on October 31st and April 30th annually. Applicants must provide details on their proposed research topic, motivation for enrolling, academic achievements, and submit a CV. An academic reference is required from their (proposed) master’s thesis supervisor or a member of the academic staff from their qualifying institution.


Selection Panel and Process:

The Selection Panel, comprising the University of Waikato Scholarships Committee, ranks applications based on academic merit and other criteria. Decisions are finalized in November/December and June/July each year.


Other Conditions:

The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards, provided regulations allow. Recipients are encouraged to seek financial advice regarding tax implications and must inform scholarships@waikato.ac.nz of any changes in circumstances. By accepting the Scholarship, recipients agree to participate in publicity arranged by the University of Waikato.
