Job Notice

The department offers a four-year undergraduate degree and a graduate master’s program in Mechanical Engineering with 10 academic staff members, 13 technical staff, and 2  administrative staff. There are six laboratories in Thermal and Heat Transfer, manufacturing,  material science laboratory, and thermodynamics that includes refrigeration and air  conditioning for students’ laboratory work and research, along with a medium size workshop  with facilities for machining, milling, a computer numerical control (CNC) machine, EDM, and  fabrication including a 3000-degree Celsius foundry.


The department also has an NDT Center for research and consultancy service to the  industry. Several types of research are done in the areas of design and manufacturing,  materials characterization, renewable energy and environment, mechatronics, engineering  education and refrigeration, and air conditioning.

Professors 2x (ME0-001, ME0-016)

The Professorial positions are specifically in at least one or more of the following areas: Thermal and Fluids, Renewable Energy. 

Candidates are expected to demonstrate a  potential for teaching excellence and scholarly activity with continued professional  development in the general area of mechanical design. This position involves teaching  undergraduate and graduate students and developing an active, externally funded research

program. It is anticipated that the candidate will attract funded research projects and  contracts in their areas of research and develop links with relevant local industries and  international agencies for collaborative research that will promote the mission of the  university. The candidate must have the ability to lead and to be able to perform effectively  as a team and a proven commitment to research at an international level as demonstrated  by publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings. Candidates  must possess an ability to communicate effectively and work closely with students, faculty,  staff, administration, and other stakeholders with diverse backgrounds.

Minimal Qualifications:

Candidates must have earned a doctorate (Ph. D.) degree in mechanical engineering or a  closely related field from an accredited institution. The successful candidate must be a  mature person with at least 15 years of full-time university teaching and research  experience in a similar environment with fifteen (15) or more publications in reputed  journals that are listed in SCOPUS, ISI (SCI), or ERA. Preference will be given to candidates  with demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and research, experience with  laboratory-based instructions, online or blended instructions, industrial experience,

experience with engineering accreditation, and willingness to teach in multiple areas of the  undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Special considerations will be given to candidates  with demonstrated practical skills in Thermal and Fluids, Renewable Energy.

Conditions of Service

Base Salary Range: Professor PGK91,201 – PGK111,468 per annum

Base International Market Allowance (IMA) Range:  PGK94,103 – PGK140,717 per annum

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

The initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in

the first year, 35% in the second year, and 40% in the third year (paid on fortnightly basis),

support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and  dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK750.00 per annum, settling-in/out  allowance of PGK1,700.00 for single & PGK3,600.00 for accompanied plus PGK200.00 for  each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and  repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two  authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance  towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also  permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of their earnings annually. Consultancy

projects need to be approved by the respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor’s office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG  attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.
